Designing Performance Ready Touch UI for Guitarists

HeadRush Touchscreen UI — Bringing Instrument Focus to Live Performance

We designed a responsive touchscreen interface for pro-stompbox players using HeadRush pedalboards. The goal was to help musicians focus on playing not fiddling. The redesigned UI delivers instant visual feedback, a clean layout for effects chains and libraries, and enables transitions by touch or pedal. It’s intuitive, consistent, and becomes a seamless part of the musician’s flow.

THE PROBLEM Riders and live musicians struggled with cluttered UIs on performance pedals, it distracted and slowed them down. MY ROLE As the lead designer, I worked closely with product managers, hardware engineers, and musicians to define user needs and visual hierarchy. WHAT WE DID • Observed live playing sessions to identify interaction delay points • Created rapid sketches and touch workflow prototypes • Designed a clean, feedback driven layout highlighting active effects • Built a modular interface system to quickly adapt to new hardware • Delivered specs and assets for quality integration OUTCOMES • UI praised in usability testing for speed and clarity during live use • Musicians reported better focus and faster changes mid-performance • A modular system allowed new features to roll out smoothly over time • Demonstrated design could evolve without compromising performance
